Weekend Writing Warriors #8SUNDAY ~ 2015 Christmas Story

Hi friends, welcome back to my page.  Does anyone else have weird trick-or-treating hours in their city?  Ours is this Sunday!  I’m not ready.  This week I’m sharing a little more from the Christmas story I’m working on….  I skipped ahead a little bit….

And now it’s time for WEEKEND WRITING WARRIORS!  (Did you read that with a wrestling announcers voice?  That’s what I was going for.)

Wondering who we are?  We are a fabulous group of individuals that posts 8-10 sentences on their blogs from a published or unpublished book. Then we “hop” around and leave comments on each other’s snippets.  We welcome EVERYONE’s comments.~

“Sweetheart, sit down.”  My mother said, eying my father who stood across the room without saying a word.

I felt my heart drop as I looked across the room at them.  Their expressions were serious, in spite of the sweet scent of pumpkin empanadas that filled the room.  My mother crossed her arms over her yellow sweater and glanced at my father for approval.  Only when he nodded did she continue.

“Evaliz, your sister was in an accident.”  My mother said slowly.  “She was in the back of a taxi cab that slammed into another car.”

Great scene. I’ve never smelled a pumpkin empanada, never even knew they existed, yet I could smell them here!

Terrific contrast between the sweet pumpkin smell and the tragic news, it really yanks at the heart. (hope there will be a Christmas miracle and the sister will recover)

    Oh, no!
There never is a good way or time for telling bad news.
    Excellent scene-setting Neva.

  4. Adding the little detail of the fragrance of the pumpkin settles us into the scene and makes us feel warm and cozy then you smack us with the car accident – great contrast.

  5. Uh-oh, potential tragedy at the holidays. At least it sounds like comfort food is available if needed!

  6. Neva, this is lovely scene setting before the frightening news,

  7. I’m with everyone the contrast in the homely smells and that bright sweater–and the tense expressions and the terrible news really works.

  8. Oh dear, now I’m on the edge of my chair! Great excerpt, even if a cliffhanger…
